in the winter of '01, john stubbs and i were driving north to ohio to visit our friend chris in mentor, a suburb of cleveland. we stopped in northern kentucky about 3 miles from cincinatti to get some food. when we left Wendy's and got back on I-75 it was at a complete standstill. it had began to snow pretty hard and the DOT had closed the interstate to plow it. we had been sitting there for about 45 minutes when i began thinking about that old REM video for "everybody hurts" where all those people in the traffic jam just get out of there cars and leave the scene. even though it was about 23 degrees outside i told john to roll the windows of his jeep cherokee down. he did this as i started fumbling through my cd's. and there it was...REM's "automatic for the people". i put it in the player, skipped up to track six and turned his stereo all the way up. the two girls in the car next to it heard the song and started laughing. the guy in the driver's seat of the car behind us began to laugh too. he opened up his window and climbed out onto the roof of his car, laughing. so, john and i got out, also. pretty soon everyone in our little area of the interstate had gotten out of there cars and were throwing snowballs at each other. by the time our three hour wait in the jam was almost over everyone within about two or three hundred yards were out in the snowball fight on the interstate. it was completely amazing. that scene made my whole winter that year.
